THE SPIRIT HAS MOVED LPC TO JOIN THE GULF COAST
RELIEF EFFORT IN NEW ORLEANS!

The Mission & Witness Committee
is pleased to announce that a November informational meeting about
organizing a Gulf Coast/Katrina Relief Team mission trip was well
attended. Many thanks to the 15 folks who submitted a volunteer
interest and skills assessment survey. We have reserved housing
accommodations at the First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans on
Claiborne Avenue in the downtown, Broadmoor area.
We plan to travel to NO on Saturday, March 17 and
return on Saturday, March 24, 2007.
Rev. Diane Hutchins will be
our spiritual advisor and teammate. Kathy Brown will be the mission
trip coordinator. Our next task will be
to confirm volunteers and then make the travel arrangements, whether
by purchasing airplane tickets or verifying drivers so that all
volunteers arrive in NO on Saturday, March 17. We are seeking
donations of frequent flyer miles to help with the cost of the
airfare. Then we will determine if a rental car or van will be
needed and make that reservation very soon. Some team members may
need to leave early, but we recommend that everyone arrive around
the same time so that all will receive the orientation and city tour
and be involved in the initial organization of work teams.
Bob Schminkey is the
Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Coordinator for National
Capital, Baltimore and New Castle Presbyteries. In this part-time
position, he works with over 200 congregations to help them be
prepared for unanticipated events in the community and understand
the role of Presbyterian Disaster Response both locally and
globally. Much of his time is currently devoted to enabling
congregations to send "hands-on" mission groups to the gulf
coast for work in hurricane recovery efforts of the PCUSA and our
mission partners.
Bob will be offering his
services and expertise to LPC during a Mission TripVolunteer
Workshop on Sunday, January 7, 2007 from
9:30AM-10:45AM during the Sunday school hour. We
encourage all interested members to attend. He will talk
with us about what to expect when we go to New Orleans, the physical
challenges of this mission trip, and most importantly, he will help
us prepare spiritually for this experience. If you would like to
know more about our needs and plans, please contact Kathy Brown.
The Mission & Witness Committee
has committed to sending Rev. Diane Hutchins as part of a team of
LPC volunteer workers to New Orleans for a week from March 17-24,
2007 to assist in relief efforts in the city. We anticipate
needing about 10 to 15 round trip airfares from Dulles
International (IAD) to New Orleans (MSY). We are seeking
individual donations or if at all possible, corporate donations that
could cover the miles for a number of tickets.
Call or see Kathy
Brown with any helpful suggestions, ideas or donations. Thanks
in advance for your assistance – we will need all your prayers and
support in the next few months as we prepare physically and
spiritually to undertake this challenge!
